Weekends – The Death Of Progress

by Clark Hibbs

WEEKENDS.

The time of the week that so many of us crave and enjoy. Everyone loves a good weekend after a long week of busting your butt at work, AND busting your butt at the gym. You work hard each week to get towards your career goals and your fitness goals. What does that lead us to want to do on the weekends? Well, blow off some steam, naturally!

But here’s the thing about so many weekends…

These tend to be the death of progress.

There are parties, dinners out, drinks, more drinks, bad food, ordering to-go food, MORE drinks, events…

No matter how perfect you’ve been all week long, and no matter how hard you’ve worked, a weekend of going off the rails can get you right back to where you started on Monday morning.

Frustrating, isn’t it?

But it doesn’t HAVE to be that way. You can still make progress throughout the weekend. You don’t have to ruin progress, get derailed, and then wake up tired and frustrated on Monday morning.

One of the best things you can do? Build some positive momentum going into the weekend (that’s why you’re seeing this posted on a Friday!).

-Get a workout in on Friday and Saturday morning (and even keep it going Sunday?)
-Eat dinner at home on Friday if you know the rest of the weekend is going to be spent going out.
-Get hydrated and stay hydrated. You’ll always make better decisions when you’re hydrated.
-Catch up on SLEEP. You always make better decisions when you’re well rested.

When you’re in the throws of the weekend, do your best to make the best decisions possible. Choose low calorie meals when you’re out, put a hard cap on alcohol (or at least drink 1 glass of water in between drinks), wait 20-30 minutes after you’ve eaten one serving to see if you actually need more food (you probably don’t!).

Weekends are an awesome time to relax and recharge, but don’t let it get in the way of you getting towards your goals. You can still have fun AND make progress. You just have to be mindful of your actions.

Here’s to an awesome weekend! Happy Friday, everyone!
